Derek is an associate clinical social worker who comes to the field of psychotherapy after a deep spiritual calling to embody compassion and be of service to others on their healing journeys. After performing on Broadway in the musical Cabaret, Derek obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology to assist individuals with communication disorders. While a professor of speech-language pathology at University of the Pacific, he returned to school for a Master of Social Work degree. He prides himself on his relational, humanistic approach to the therapeutic process, knowing that deep care and empathy are foundational to what creates meaningful change.
Derek has obtained training in a modern form of cognitive behavioral therapy known as TEAM-CBT, which emphasizes empathy and the therapeutic alliance formed between client and clinician. He incorporates aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as Mindful Self-Compassion to help clients find deeper meaning and purpose in their lives while simultaneously being gentle with themselves.
